Self Locking Nuts

Self-Locking Nuts

  • This method usually use for a safety feature is included as an integral part of their construction, most self-locking nuts designed and use to quite widespread, there some applications like is attached of exhaust stacks and rocker box covers and also attach of accessories, anchor nuts are around inspection holes and some tank install is open and control pulleys.
  •  This locking is more useful on aircraft to just provided a tight connection may not cause shake to lose when there is severe vibration and is used only for certificated aircraft that is restrict by a manufacture, ensure to not use this locking as joints may cause rotation and also is used with control pulleys and antifriction bearing.
  •  The inner race of the bearing is clamping to support structure by bolt and nut, and the plates must attach to the structure in a positive manner to just eliminate rotation when the bolt is tighten, usually in construction is use metal or fiber, there some type of self-locking the nut is booted self-locking and stainless steel self-locking nuts and elastic stop nut.

 Boots Self-Locking Nut:

  •  Is designed for all metal construction and use to hold tight despite vibration, there two nuts in one, a locking nut and load-carrying nut combine two sections are connected with spring that is an integral part of the nut, this spring ensures to keep the locking and load-carrying like a distance apart that two sets of threads are spaced to that bolt, that is screwed through the load-carrying must push the locking outward against the force of spring to just relate the threads of the locking section.
  • These three types of spring in various shapes and sizes the wing type is the most common range I size for 6 inch and the bellow type range in size 8 inch and roll-top range in size 1 divided 4 inch, for the wing type usually use anodized aluminum alloy and form bellow type from aluminum alloy and the roll-top is from cadmium plated steel.

 Stainless Steel Self-Locking Nut:

  •  When the nut is seated against a solid surface and tighten we use this type of locking just by spun on and off by hand like locking action, the nut is shown of two parts in the case with beveled locking shoulder and key and thread insert with a locking shoulder and slotted keyway, the nut is spun on the bolt until the nut is tightened, so when is seated and tightened, this locking is pull down and wedged against locking shoulder by this action the threaded insert cause to clench the bolt tightening.

Elastic Stop Nut:

  • This normal nut with height increase to accommodate a fiber locking collar, it’s very tough and is unaffected by immersion in cold water or hot water like a carbon tetrachloride or gasoline and it’s not damaged bolt threads, this fiber locking collar isn’t threaded and inside diameter is small more than the large diameter of threaded the portion of the corresponding bolt, when bolt screw into the fiber collar is cause the push upward for the fiber, the elastic stop nut is made from aluminum alloy or steel ensure when reusing this locking that the fiber isn’t lost it’s locking friction and if can the nut turn just replace with other.

Sheet Spring Nuts:

  • This type is using in conduit clamps, electrical equipment, and access doors are like speed nuts is used sheet metal self tap screws in non-structural place is made from spring steel and is arched prior to tightening, this arched for preventing the screw from working loose, this type of nuts uses only in the fabrication of the aircraft.
