Slats

  • Is defined that a leading-edge device which extends a wing camber or a small aerofoil called slat is placed in front of the main aerofoil have a suitable gap and by this device the volume of lift of the aerofoil, resume the ability to fly the aircraft slower with a reduced stall speed on the flight, and still maintain control in the air.

  •  That the  maximum lift coefficient of the aerofoil may be increased by as much as 60 percent of this. Whatever  the stalling angle may be increased from 15° to 22° or more than.
  •  is not only always an advantage as we shall discover when we consider the problems of the landing of aircraft, is not effective to separate slat, but the reason is also still a breakdown of the steady streamline airflow.
  • To just keep the airflow smooth that is flowing around the gap by a slotted wing, the slots open permanently on commercial aircraft to just get extra drag at high speed is disadvantage but the extra lift obtains a lower landing of aircraft.
  • By control the mechanism we can control slots t just simple backward or forward, in the high speeds are close and the low speeds are open, so this device is moving by the action of air pressure, to just making action near the landing edge.
  • The reached of the stalling angle is by the force who’s inclined forward the slots, sometimes the opening of slots can be delayed cause of vent at leading-edge just some of  tensioning device is very important to ensure that slots are open on both wing at some time to just have to save flight.
  • We can conclude the value of the slot in maintaining a simple smooth airflow on the top surface of wing and can be materially enhanced by blowing air through the gap between slat and wing and this called a blown slot of aircraft.
  • The other called of the ‘slot idea’ is to be extended to other parts of the aircraft. Like shaped cowlings are used to smooth the airflow over an engine of the aircraft, and some fillets may be used.
