why disconnect the Ground Power Unit during Storms

  • How Faraday's Cage has been a savior to Aircraft Fuselage, structures & components? Why is it advised to disconnect the Ground Power Unit during Storms?
  • Faraday cage or shield is an enclosure formed by conducting material or by a mesh of such material to create continuity throughout the aircraft body.
  • Such an enclosure blocks external 'static' & 'non-static' electric fields by channeling electricity through the mesh, providing constant voltage on all sides of the enclosure.
  • Since the difference in voltage is the measure of electrical potential, no current flows through space, continuity is necessary.
  • A Faraday cage operates because an external static electrical field causes the electric charges within the cage’s conducting material to be distributed such that they cancel the field’s effect in the cage interior.
  • This is how electronic equipment are protected from lightning strikes & electrostatic discharges by Blocking EMF Radiation.
Ground Power Unit disconnection:
  • Faraday cage is capable of avoiding damage by lightning strikes. But, when an aircraft is connected to a ground power supply, the connecting cable provides a direct route to the aircraft’s systems causing further harm to the electrical components.
